History
HISTORY OF JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT WORLDWIDE.
Junior Achievement Inc. (JA) is world’s largest and fastest-growing non-profit economic education organization. Founded in 1919 by Theodore Vail, president of American Telephone & Telegraph; Horoce Moses, president of Strathmore Paper co,; and Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts, JA was founded with the intent of bring education to a new level by linking the business and education communities. The concept was simple, to teach the next generation the essential economic life skills in a direct, enjoyable manner. To achieve this vision, volunteers with considerable business experience were invited into classrooms to facilitate school programs, and more importantly, to interact with the young students. This opportunity for sharing provided students with practical learning which was both new and engaging. Aside from enriching classroom activities, JA volunteers also provided students with the proper motivation and guidance in the establishment of their own student “mini-companies.” This direct experience contributed to a deeper understanding of business and ultimately led young people to see that staying in school is key to success.
JA’s first program was offered to high School students on an after-school basis. In 1975, the organization entered the classroom with the introduction of Project Business for the middle grades. In the last 23 years, Junior Achievement gradually expanded its activities and broadened its scope to encompass an ever-widening student population. With over 174 offices in the United States, JA currently serves over 20,000 American communities and teaches over 9 million U.S. students each year. Because of its far-reaching value, it continues to be supported by numerous corporations and currently operates on a $ 11.9 million annual budget. Contributors include over 200 U.S. corporate and foundation grants. In addition to contributing financially, U.S. companies are instrumental to JAPI’s expansion programs to countries outside the United States where they have operations. These programs were well-received by host countries prompting JA to create an international arm, Junior Achievement Worldwide
